CNN —The influential network associated with billionaire Charles Koch will no longer throw its money behind former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary and will instead focus on key Senate and House races, the group announced in an email to staff obtained by CNN. Americans for Prosperity Action’s endorsement in November was a significant boost for Haley as she sought to become the leading alternative to former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary. But while the race has come down to Haley and Trump, the former president remains the dominant front-runner after a strong victory in Haley’s home state on Saturday. “AFP is a great organization and ally in the fight for freedom and conservative government.

CNN —Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s wealth saw a major boost on Thursday as the company he cofounded in 1993 surged in value. Huang, 61, is now worth an estimated $68.1 billion, passing Charles Koch and rapidly gaining on members of the Walton family, who own Walmart, which has a roughly $471 billion market cap. Huang has been at the helm of Nvidia since its beginning, serving as co-founder, CEO, president and board member. Shares of AMD (AMD) were 11% higher on Thursday and Microsoft (MSFT) rose 2%. But the company’s soaring stock price over the past year — shares grew around 230% in 2023 — means Nvidia is now deeply important to the broader market, too.

Nikki Haley hosts a rally in Conway as part of her swing in the Palmetto State leading up to the State's primary, in Conway SC, United States on January 28, 2024. During a speech billed as a "state of the race" update, Haley said she intends to stay in the 2024 election, regardless of her performance in the upcoming South Carolina Republican primary. The spokesperson also pointed to several instances where Trump's attacks on Haley led to millions of fundraising dollars. For example, Haley raised $1 million in 48 hours after Trump attacked Haley's husband's military service. That threat drove $2 million in contributions over 48 hours to the Haley campaign, according to a Haley spokesperson.

(Reuters) - U.S. presidential contender Nikki Haley has enjoyed a bump in support among voters and donors over the last four months, and is now the lone challenger to former President Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. She is the daughter of two immigrants from India who ran a clothing store in rural South Carolina, and has spoken occasionally about the discrimination her family faced. She took on leadership roles in several business organizations before winning a seat in the South Carolina state legislature in 2004. Haley also appointed Tim Scott, then a U.S. representative from South Carolina, to the U.S. Senate in 2012. Her memoir was, appropriately, entitled: “Are You Tough Enough?”Her son Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court justice since 2017, has shown his own brand of defiance and anti-regulatory fervor. In recent years, Justice Gorsuch has voted against regulations that protect the environment, student-debt forgiveness and Covid-19 precautions. He has led calls on the court for reversal of a 1984 Supreme Court decision that gives federal agencies considerable regulatory latitude and that, coincidentally traces to his mother’s tenure. The lawyers who will argue on behalf of the challengers are seasoned appellate advocates who once served as Supreme Court law clerks, as did Solicitor General Prelogar. That argument has prevailed in courts for decades, but the Supreme Court has signaled that it is ready for a new era.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s easy win in Iowa on Monday confirms that there really is no race for the Republican nomination this year. Iowa is a solid red state that gives a good sense of where the Republican Party as a whole stands today. The DeSantis campaign and its outside allies spent $35 million in the state between January 1, 2023, and January 12 of this year. Even with an almost 2:1 spending advantage over Trump, DeSantis couldn’t mount an effective challenge — not even with the backing of Reynolds and Vander Plaats. DeSantis and Haley were not weak opponents — but as Iowa shows, even strong rivals can’t touch Trump.

The battle to win the Republican Iowa caucus is the most expensive on record, with over $120 million spent on ads by the campaigns and their affiliated political action committees in the Hawkeye State, according to data provided to CNBC by AdImpact. Around $84 million of the $120 million total ad buys came from campaigns and allies of the top three candidates, Trump, Haley and Florida. DeSantis' campaign and two outside allies have spent a combined $30 million on TV, digital, and radio ads in Iowa. One of the two DeSantis super PACs, Never Back Down, has knocked on over 915,000 doors in the Iowa, according to the organization. As for Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc. would not provide data on what efforts they've made outside of their ad spending in support of the former president.

CNN —The Republican presidential debates have so far produced two big winners – one who will be center stage Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the fourth GOP matchup, and another who won’t be there at all. The good news for Haley is that she is now running neck-and-neck for second place with the formerly formidable Florida Gov. In skipping the debates, Trump wagered that without his oversized presence, his opponents would primarily train their fire on each other. With Trump absent, Haley, who thus far has mostly eluded frontal attacks, is more likely to get frontrunner treatment from her rivals on Wednesday night. Chris Christie, the most outspoken critic of Trump in the Republican field, also hopes to make New Hampshire a breakthrough moment.

AFP Action senior adviser Emily Seidel said in a briefing document explaining the decision that Haley was best positioned to beat Trump in the primary. What Haley could gain from the endorsementHaley has one thing every successful candidate needs as first voting nears – a rising political trajectory. And Tuesday’s developments complicated his campaign’s efforts to convince big corporate donors that he is the best hope to defeat Trump. As well as muscle in the campaign advertising wars, its endorsement could bring major donors to Haley’s campaign. Even when it comes to a candidate who is as disdainful of democracy as Trump is, voters decide.

Nikki Haley is instructive. But nowhere does it talk in depth about policy or what the Koch brothers’ organization represents within the Republican coalition. What makes Haley interesting in this race is not, in fact, her position in the polls but her position in the party. Haley was, after all, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, an interesting position for someone who so sharply diverges from Trump’s ostensibly non-interventionist foreign policy. Or maybe it’s Haley, the standard-bearer for a more inclusive Republican Party, defined by her identities as a woman and Indian-American.
